Student Council

The Education Act encourages all schools to have a student council. Lucan Community College operates a student council made up of an elected representative from each class. A number of teachers also attend student council meetings and act as liaisons for the students. In this way, student views can be expressed and student ideas can enhance the running of the school. Co-operating teachers are Mr Duffy and Ms Gallagher. Student Council Chairperson this year (2009-2010) is Abigail Malone of 4th year. For the year 09'-10' the Student Council has a number of projects to be planned and carried out. These projects include,

  • International Student Identity Cards - Working with ISSU (Irish Secondary Students' Union) on making student cards available to all pupils in the school.
  • Green Schools Project  - Receiving a Green Flag for Environmental Awareness.
  • Letters and Petitions to local T.Ds and Minister Batt O'Keefe regarding funding cutbacks and educational cuts directly affecting students and their education.
  • Designated Areas for Senior Students at lunch times.
  • The cleaning and maintenance of the student bathrooms

Parents' Association

The Parents' Association (PA) was formed shortly after the College opened its doors. As set out in its constitution, its objectives are

  • To advance the education of the students by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities not normally provided by the VEC or the Department of Education and Science.
  • To foster more extended relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school.

The PA committee consists of up to 16 parents, elected annually, together with the parents' representatives on the board of management.

In previous years, the PA has organised talks on drugs and stress, and has arranged introductory evenings for first year parents and students. It also has an important role as a fund-raising body. We have lobbied the Department on such matters as the new school building and the weight of school bags. All in all, quite an active record!

The sense of community in Lucan Community College is fostered by the close involvement of the PA in the life of the college.

Gluais

The aim of Gluais is to make our school a better place for all students.

Gluais is a voluntary organisation which has been running for eight years. It is currently operational in seven schools in the locality. In LCC, Gluais is a group of 10 students, from 5th year and LCA2, working together to help the 1st year students settle in and make new friends.

A new Gluais team is selected every year. Membership is through application and interview. An external interviewer comes to the school, and selects the team based on the applicants' leadership qualities, hobbies and general suitability.

The programme trains second-level students in the various aspects of successful leadership. Each year, the Gluais team goes on a training course, which is a great experience, an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and learn the skills necessary for working as a group during the year.

The 2007-2008 team was Fiona Carty, Ledia Alia, Lauren Grant, Andrea Field, Martin O'Shea, Niall Smith, Mark Harding, Daniel Malone, Enda Fennell, Gary Ryan and reserves, Rebecca Haydena and Cormac Reynolds.

Gluais organise discos and trips for 1st year students as well as fundraising events, such as Non-Uniform Days. The 2006/2007 group (pictured below) were Hazel Callaghan, Dean Hickey, Colm O'Brien, Jake Murphy, Michael O'Neill, Mark McCarthy, Joanna Butcher, Katie Maher, Amy Bartley, Donna Kinsella. We congratulate them on their successful year's work. Ms Grace Clifford is co-ordinating teacher of the Gluais Leadership Programme.

Past pupil profiles

Lara Harte did her Leaving Certificate in LCC in 1992. She followed this with a year studying Communications at DIT, before moving to the Arts Faculty at UCD where she studied English and French, which, she says, were her best subjects in school.

Between the two courses, she started her first novel, First Time, which was published while she was still a student at UCD. After graduation, she became a full-time writer, and her second novel, Losing It, was published in 2000. A third novel, Wild Geese, is due for publication early in 2003, and Lara is already hard at work on the fourth.

Anthony Malone left LCC in 1990, only to return five years later as a member of the teaching staff! In between, he had an illustrious academic career. His Leaving Cert results won him the inaugural Smurfit University Scholarship, where he studied English and History, gaining the top place for that combination in his Degree exam.

Another scholarship took him to the University of Copenhagen for a Master's Degree (with the added complication that all classes were taught in Danish!), and he returned with a First Class Honours M.A. a year later.

The H.Dip. in Education followed, and so Anthony returned to LCC for many years mainly teaching English. For the past number of years, Anthony has been on secondment to NUI Maynooth Education Department as leader of the research project TL21. August 2006, Anthony took up the post of Vice-Principal in the new Co. Meath VEC Rathoat College but has now gained a permanent lecturship post in the Education Department of NUI Maynooth.

Cian Curley graduated from LCC in 2003 and after the past five years playing golf for Leinster and Ireland under age level, he has now made his debut with the Ireland senior amateur panel. Cian plays out of Newlands GC and has a handicap of +2.1.

Cian succeeded in obtaining one of the Paddy Harrington/NUI Maynooth golf scholarships in 2008. Established in 2006, with the support of Oceanico Group and JP McManus, the Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarships are a collaboration between NUI Maynooth and the Golfing Union of Ireland’s (GUI) National Golf Academy, based at Carton House.

Students on this scholarship have the use of the two championship golf courses, The Montgomerie and The O’Meara in Carton House Estate, and also benefit from warm winter training on the famous Oceanico Group golf courses in the Algarve of Portugal. We wish Cian well in his future career.

If you are a former student of the college and would like to become a member, please click on the link below, print the attachment and send it for the attention of Ms. Jean Regan at the school.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
