Student Council

The Education Act encourages all schools to have a student council. Lucan Community College operates a student council made up of an elected representative from each class. A number of teachers also attend student council meetings and act as liaisons for the students. In this way, student views can be expressed and student ideas can enhance the running of the school. Co-operating teachers are Mr Duffy and Ms Gallagher. Student Council Chairperson this year (2009-2010) is Abigail Malone of 4th year. For the year 09'-10' the Student Council has a number of projects to be planned and carried out. These projects include,

  • International Student Identity Cards - Working with ISSU (Irish Secondary Students' Union) on making student cards available to all pupils in the school.
  • Green Schools Project  - Receiving a Green Flag for Environmental Awareness.
  • Letters and Petitions to local T.Ds and Minister Batt O'Keefe regarding funding cutbacks and educational cuts directly affecting students and their education.
  • Designated Areas for Senior Students at lunch times.
  • The cleaning and maintenance of the student bathrooms

As part of the Board’s efforts to keep the school community in touch with the work that it does at meetings, the Board has decided to publish an agreed report on each of the meetings held. The report maintains the confidential nature of many of the agenda items by not naming individuals or giving specifics on such matters. The Board hopes that these reports will assist the school community in understanding its role and function.

Parents' Association

The Parents' Association (PA) was formed shortly after the College opened its doors. As set out in its constitution, its objectives are

  • To advance the education of the students by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities not normally provided by the VEC or the Department of Education and Science.
  • To foster more extended relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school.

The PA committee consists of up to 16 parents, elected annually, together with the parents' representatives on the board of management.

In previous years, the PA has organised talks on drugs and stress, and has arranged introductory evenings for first year parents and students. It also has an important role as a fund-raising body. We have lobbied the Department on such matters as the new school building and the weight of school bags. All in all, quite an active record!

The sense of community in Lucan Community College is fostered by the close involvement of the PA in the life of the college.

Gluais

Gluais is the Irish word for guide. At Lucan C.C. a number of selected 5th year students take on the role as guides to 1st year students. Throughout the year, the 5th year students work closely with their assigned 1st year group. Gluais has been a valued programme in our school community since 1995.

This year's Gluais team consists of 10 members; Aisling McHugh, Hannah Behan, Danielle Hanley, Amy Twamley, Sophie Twamley, Oisín Walsh, Michael Vu, Sinéad O'Keeffe, Jenny Oleinik. The chairperson of the team is Sean Dunne. Membership is through application and interview. An external interviewer comes to the school, and selects the team based on the applicants' leadership qualities, hobbies and general suitability.

Back in April 2012, we attended our first training session. We went to Kerrdiffstown House, where we spent 5 days training. During this time, we met students from other schools and our 3 leaders. After our training we went to a number of primary schools to meet our incoming 1st years. In September, the Gluais team were a part of the orientation day for 1st years. In the first few weeks of school, we were there to help them with any little problems they had with finding their way around the school etc.

Throughout the year we take part in some fun activities with the 1st years: going on a walk of Lucan, organising the Christmas disco, and organising a 1st year fun day.

For the Gluais team, we are developing our skills in leadership, teamwork and communication. When we were in 1st year, we were happy to have the extra help and support from the Gluais team. Now we feel lucky to able to continue the Gluais tradition in the school. Our cooperating teachers are Ms Grace Clifford and Ms Vivienne Conway. To find out more about the Gluais programme visit http://gluais.org/.

Past pupil profiles

Lara Harte did her Leaving Certificate in LCC in 1992. She followed this with a year studying Communications at DIT, before moving to the Arts Faculty at UCD where she studied English and French, which, she says, were her best subjects in school.

Between the two courses, she started her first novel, First Time, which was published while she was still a student at UCD. After graduation, she became a full-time writer, and her second novel, Losing It, was published in 2000. A third novel, Wild Geese, is due for publication early in 2003, and Lara is already hard at work on the fourth.

Anthony Malone left LCC in 1990, only to return five years later as a member of the teaching staff! In between, he had an illustrious academic career. His Leaving Cert results won him the inaugural Smurfit University Scholarship, where he studied English and History, gaining the top place for that combination in his Degree exam.

Another scholarship took him to the University of Copenhagen for a Master's Degree (with the added complication that all classes were taught in Danish!), and he returned with a First Class Honours M.A. a year later.

The H.Dip. in Education followed, and so Anthony returned to LCC for many years mainly teaching English. For the past number of years, Anthony has been on secondment to NUI Maynooth Education Department as leader of the research project TL21. August 2006, Anthony took up the post of Vice-Principal in the new Co. Meath VEC Rathoat College but has now gained a permanent lecturship post in the Education Department of NUI Maynooth.

Cian Curley graduated from LCC in 2003 and after the past five years playing golf for Leinster and Ireland under age level, he has now made his debut with the Ireland senior amateur panel. Cian plays out of Newlands GC and has a handicap of +2.1.

Cian succeeded in obtaining one of the Paddy Harrington/NUI Maynooth golf scholarships in 2008. Established in 2006, with the support of Oceanico Group and JP McManus, the Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarships are a collaboration between NUI Maynooth and the Golfing Union of Ireland’s (GUI) National Golf Academy, based at Carton House.

Students on this scholarship have the use of the two championship golf courses, The Montgomerie and The O’Meara in Carton House Estate, and also benefit from warm winter training on the famous Oceanico Group golf courses in the Algarve of Portugal. We wish Cian well in his future career.

Past Pupils

Lucan CC are interested in setting up a past pupils group. We envisage that such a group would set up and maintain a facebook page, take responsibility for ensuring that college activities such as concerts, musicals and major sports events are publicised among the local past student community and organise get-togethers for year groups celebrating different anniversaries. If interested, such a group could produce a ‘where are they now’ section for our website as we would love to hear about the adventures of our past pupils. We would be delighted to facilitate any year group who wish to organise an opportunity to catch up with friends and classmates. Please email the office at: admin.lucancc@codubvec.ie if you would be willing to join a past pupils group.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
