Lucan Community College is committed to furthering the musical talents of its students. Music, as a subject, is offered up to Higher level Leaving Certificate. Many of our past students have gone on to study music in some capacity at third level. Both music students and non-music students are encouraged to sing and play in the school’s choirs and perform in the many concerts and musical events which are very important to the life of our school.
The school choir sings at events such as the annual Carol Service, the Art's Week Music Department Evening Concerts, the annual VEC Festival of Music in the National Concert Hall and the end-of-year Graduation Ceremonies for TY and 6th year and whole school end-of-year service. RTE Lyric FM has aired our school’s Christmas carol competition entries many times over recent years.
Music students from Lucan CC also participate in local music events and trips to competitions, concerts and musicals. Music teachers Eithne Bean, Andrew Purcell and Ciaran Duffy facilitate the music students in all areas of their musical activity. A successful trip by 16 senior music students to the Bad Segeberg (Germany) European music choral festival in the summer of 2006 was a highlight of last summer.
Many instrumentalists have played in the orchestras for our school musical productions and have also played with the brass and reed band in the VEC Festival of Music in the NCH along with all the soloists and ensembles who have performed on many stages in and around Dublin. Musical composition is also valued, with student singer-songwriters and bands regularly performing gigs. The National Chamber Choir has even performed a LCC student’s choral composition in the Final of the NCC school’s composition competition in Dublin Castle.
Rocker guitarists, wanna-be ‘Your-a Stars’ and Heavy metal bands are all accommodated in the annual Variety show and the teaching staff also have been known to strut their stuff in the Teacher’s Pop-Idol talent show!
The school Chamber Choir 'LC4', consisting of students from 1st to 6th year, conducted by Mr Duffy, has already been involved in a spectacular CD ‘Lucan Sings for Africa – Carols for Christmas’ and appearance on TV3 'Ireland AM' show. They also won the National Youth Choir of the Year section at the North Wales Choral Festival 2006 and performed Fauré's Requiem in May 2007 and Vivaldi's Gloria in May 2008 along with many other choral classics in excellent concerts in St Andew's Church in Lucan village. The Chamber Choir performs in many local musical events right throughout the year. Rehearsals in G5 at 8.15am Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
An annual bursary for the highest achieving Leaving Certificate Music student is awarded each year (also awarded in Leaving Cert History) – the Dr Ian D’Alton awards. Music Prizes for Senior and Junior Music Student are also awarded at the End of Year Ceremony Awards day.
