Debating
In September 2002, Ms Liz Dunbar re-established the Lucan Community College Debate club. There has been a very strong tradition of debating in the college and this wonderful pastimehas now been resurrected. Assisted by Mr Ciarán Duffy, the debate club is open to all students from 1st through 6th year. The club meets at least twice a week during lunch break and assembles more regularly approaching major debating competitions. The college debate club is currently involved in the Concern Debates, which is a competition open to all senior students (4th, 5th and 6th years.)
Amnesty International
Amnesty International has a very active branch in the college. This encourages students to involve themselves in issues of injustice and to broaden their world view.
Fundraising and charity events
The College encourages students to participate in appropriate fundraising and charity events each year. Students run non-uniform days, sponsored walks, fasts and stay-awakes and other imaginative events to raise money for numerous worthy causes. The examples below are merely a sample of recent events. 2007

2002
Class Shaw decided to do their Junior Certificate Civic Social and Political Education (CSPE) project on Human Rights Day, 10th December 2002. They held a non-uniform day, and every student in the school brought in €2 for Amnesty International. They also ran a shop stocked with Amnesty International goods such as pencils, candles, cards, pencil cases and rulers. This ran from 9th to 11th December. Some of the class wrote and performed a short play on human rights to raise awareness among 1st and 2nd year students, and it was extremely funny.

Class Shaw present cheque for €2200 to Amnesty International Altogether class Shaw raised a €2200. The photograph shows the class handing over the cheque to a representative from Amnesty International. Class Shaw would like to thank the staff, our teacher Ms. Joy, and Mr. O’Neill, the Principal, without whose help and support the project would not have been so successful. “We raised a lot of money and had a lot of fun but most importantly we hope the money we raised will make a difference to the lives of prisoners of conscience and others helped by Amnesty International”, commented Stephen Dent of class Shaw. |
