My Fair Lady - TY Musical 2008 The TY Musical Theatre class of 2007-2008 were extremely successful with their production of 'My Fair Lady'. This extremely long and dramatic classic musical took many months of hard work by the excellent cast and direction team to get to a fantastic stage on the nights in early mAY 2008. The singing, dancing and acting was of such a high standard that people claimed that this was the ultimate in musical drama to have been produced in our school. Well done to all the cast and backstage crew, especially to Roisin Reynolds as Eliza Doolittle and Gavin Kelly as Professor Henry Higgins on their huge commitment to the arduous main parts. Audrey Nolan took over the demanding role of choreographer this year to great applause with Andrew Purcell as Musical Director and John M. Choir trip to Germany - August 2006
The Lucan Community College choir that travelled to Bad Segeberg, just outside Hamburg, Germany for the annual Youth Choir Festival was made up of 16 music students, 12 entering 6th year and 4 students entering 5th year and Andrew Purcell and Imelda Higgins, teachers. We represented our school, the Lucan area and South Dublin County Council who have participated in this EU wide programme for the last number of years. It was a very busy 9 days of hard work and great fun during our summer holidays in August - touring around Hamburg, Lubeck and local villages performing concerts everyday, recording a CD, participating in symposiums on youth culture and getting to know the other choir members from Estonia, Poland and Germany. We performed a wide ranging repertoire from a-capella Bruckner motets to musical medleys and everything in-between, including Irish folksongs. The venues and facilities for young people to study arts, music and drama in Germany left us so jealous, as did the great food and fantastic accommodation provided (the Windmill in the photo above is the Muhle, the local arts centre where we were based). We will remember this super trip for a long time and the great friendly people we met. Choir members: Emily Dwyer, Katie Maher, Sharon Hickey, Claire Dunn, Ciara Meehan, Niamh Breen, Suzanne Fennell, Stephanie Walsh, Áine Prior, Ruth Argue, Nicole Walsh, Sean McGann, Peter, Byrne, Peter Hegarty, Derek Mooney, Colm Walsh with Mr Andrew Purcell and Ms Imelda Higgins.

LC 4 - Lucan Community College Chamber Choir
LC4 performing their Carols for Christmas concert with orchestra in St Andrew's Church, Lucan, December 2007
TV3 'Ireland AM' appearance for Chamber Choir at 7-UP RDS Ice Rink 2006 Chamber Choir practice times: in room G5 - Music Room Monday and Wednesday 8.15am Conductor: Mr Ciaran Duffy History and news The Chamber Choir of Lucan Community College has grown in size since its inception in 2003. There are now 32 members of the school chamber choir who rehearse at 8.15am three mornings a week. The choir sings in four parts, SATB -soprano, alto, tenor and bass. For the past three years the Chamber Choir has participated in the Wesley Inter Schools Music Festival, to considerable applause on each occasion. They traveled to Wales in February 2006 to compete, for the very first time, in the junior section of the North Wales International Choral Festival. The choir was accompanied by their Choral Director, Ciarán Duffy and Ms Liz Dunbar. They performed the well known Irish song ‘The Quiet Land of Erin’ and an upbeat African hymn ‘Siyahama.’ To our utmost shock and surprise the choir was victorious in the competition and was invited to perform in the winners’ concert that same night. They were presented with the perpetual trophy which now stands proudly in our school display cabinet and Ms Ciara Meehan accepted the prize on behalf of the choir. The previous November the choir was involved in a momentous event in which they recorded a CD of Christmas music in aid of the Irish charity, Self Help Development. The choir was joined by three other Lucan schools, Colaiste Cois life, St Thomas’s NS and Scoil Aine Naofa in St Andrew’s Church Lucan, on Saturday November 16 2005 to record the Cd with Mr Brian McArdle. The CD includes tracks such as Silent Night, Jingle Bells, Ring Christmas Bells and Deck the Halls. In total it raised over €15,000 for charity and was a huge success in the Lucan area. The CD was officially launched on Friday 10 December in St Patrick’s Church Lucan. So far this year, the chamber choir has been extremely busy with performances in the locality and a national television appearance! The choir was invited to sing in St Mary’s Church in Leixlip which is undergoing a massive renovation programme at the moment and a charity Christmas concert was held to raise much needed funds for this project aswell as singing in the annual school carol serivce. There are plans in motion for a weekend rehearsal trip to Donegal early next year. This will culminate with a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s much loved Requiem in May 2007. The members of the choir are

The 2006 VEC Festival of Music The highlight of the 2006 annual VEC Festival of Music was the wonderful performance of a medley from the new Broadway hit musical ‘Wicked’ by composer Stephen Schwartz, sung in perfect harmony by the music students of LCC under the baton of Andrew Purcell with help from Ciaran Duffy. This 9 minute choral extravaganza was premiered by students from 1st to 5th year. All the students on stage have recently appeared LCC’s musical productions of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, ‘Oliver’ and ‘West Side Story’. Soloists during the medley were Niamh Breen and Ruth Argue from 5th year. The musical tells the story of what happened before Dorothy came to Oz and how the Wicked Witches ended up becoming so bad! Congratulations to all who worked so hard to make this event a great success. The 2007 VEC Festival of Music Three acts from Lucan CC auditioned for solo slots in next March's National Concert Hall Co. Dublin VEC Festival of Music concert. Katie Maher and Emily Dwyer, music students from 5th year and no strangers to the platform of the National Concert Hall themselves, singing the famous duet by Lakmé, the Flower Duet, received notification that
6th years prepare for the VEC Festival of Music 2007 The 2008 VEC Festival of Music Four acts from Lucan CC auditioned for solo slots for the 10th anniversary Co Dublin VEC Festival of Music, taking place on March 11th in the National Concert Hall. Three successful acts were Adam Behan (6th year) who will be performing 'Drifting' on his guitar.
This is a combination of spectular guitar playing with syncopated rhythms also tapped out on guitar throughout the piece.
The three Kelly brothers, Gavin, Niall and Colm will perfom and sing Cohen's Allelujah.
Mr Purcell and his 20 6th year music students (with the help of Mr Duffy) will sing a very difficult 6 part a-capella arrangement of My Funny Valentine.
All of these students have either performed as soloists, in small ensemble or in the previous large medley ensembles of the last two years on the stage of the National Concert Hall. Good luck to all perfromers and Mr Purcell and Mr Duffy too.

Fiddler on the Roof The TY Musical Theatre class of 2004-2005 were extremely successful with their fantastic production of 'Fiddler on the Roof'. We were very fortunate to have Carol and Jimmy Byrne (Choreographers) on board with this great group of very talented young actors, singers and dancers. Star of the show was Tevye, the Russian Jew milkman, played by Peter Hegarty who perfected the 'Heggar' shake singing 'If I were a Richman'. Ruth Argue, playing his wife Golde, kept him in line with her sharp wit. Their five daughters, yes FIVE, played by Charlene Kavanagh, Niamh Breen, Claire Dunn, Claire McCabe and Sandra Keenan were all sweept off their feet by their suitors including Ger McGarell, Sean McGann and David Weldon. All of the smaller roles were superbly portrayted also and thanks to the teachers (all males) who played the Russian soldiers. As usual our Director, John M O'Connor and Musical Director, Andrew Purcell, were fantastic. DVD now available from Andrew Purcell!
