German Exchange 2006-2007
It all started on Sep 2nd 2006, 12 German students from Gymnasium Münchberg came over to 12 Irish families and students from Lucan Community College. They stayed with their host family and their partner student. At first it was a bit awkward but after the first day it was as if they were a part of our family. During the day they attended school and went on lots of trips. Some of the places we visited were Howth, Brittas Bay, Glendalough and Kilmainham jail, Dublin Castle and the City. The exchange was an enjoyable experience for both parties, we (the Irish) got to know friends from another country and we got to use and improve our German language and the German students got to improve their English. We were excited to go to our new family and meet our students again in Feb 2007 - Ledia Alia

The 2 weeks were action packed and we all benefited culturally, socially, linguistically, there were tears saying goodbye at the end of the 2 weeks but we were also looking forward to our fortnight in Germany in Feb 2007. Feb 10th came around very quickly - our bags were packed and we met at 4.45am at Dublin Airport with our teachers Colette Clarke (our German teacher) and Grace Clifford, who were accompanying us on our trip – we were all excited and looking forward to meeting our German friends and experience German culture on a first hand basis.
In Germany we visited lots of towns and learnt a lot about the culture of Bavarian Life. We visited Regensburg, Würzburg, Bayreuth and Mōdlareuth. Regensburg is a lovely town that has the oldest and first stone bridge to cross the Danube, Würzburg was a lovely town with a big with a big palace. Bayreuth was a town with a large opera house and Mődlareuth was a little village in which the Berlin Wall went right through. All these trips were all incredibly enjoyable but we were all tired when we got home. We all miss Germany and want to return in August - Simon O’Keefe
I thought the German exchange was brilliant! I’m very happy I did it, I had a deadly time and made loads of friends - Emma Weldon
I found the German Exchange very interesting as it improves our German and you get to make a lot of new friends – I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of going in the future.
- Amanda Nesbitt
The exchange was brilliant. We went to great places we met nice people and it’s the most fun I‘ve had in a long time - Fionn Malone
The Exchange in my opinion was the best thing the school has ever taken part in. It was the best thing I have thing I have ever done and it was well worth the money. The trips were great trips and the best thing was seeing our German friends again. It was beautiful - Alan Gallagher
In the two weeks we were in Germany we had to try speak German. Most of the time it was successful but there was a few mistakes. But overall our German has improved. It was an experience which we will never forget. I really enjoyed my 2 week stay in Münchberg. I loved making a lot of new friends and improving my German as well. I liked visiting all the historical sites in Germany and I thoroughly enjoyed this exchange - Ciara Hannan
My opinion of the German Exchange was that it was a brilliant experience. It was a great opportunity to improve my German. I also made 12 new friends from Germany. We went on so many trips and places I learnt a lot of stuff about Germany but I also learnt a small bit about Ireland.
The exchange was really good; the people over in Germany are probably the nicest people I have ever met. The countryside is beautiful and the trips and tours were very interesting. It’s also a very modern country with no speed limits on the motorways - Callum Sally
