Self-Help in Kenya

Gavin Kelly, Rebecca Ryan-Lynch and their teacher, Aisling Quirke were recently given the opportunity of going to Kenya with Self Help Africa. They set out from Dublin on 6th April and after a pleasant night in Nairobi, they headed for Molo, a small town near the Kenyan Rift Valley. On the way to the local primary school they were greeted by crowds of singing and dancing children along the road, who took them by the hand and led them to the school where entertainment was provided. They also visited Baraka Agricultural College where students study for diplomas in sustainable agriculture. Over the next 10 days they visited many women’s groups and primary schools. One of the simplest and best things they saw on the trip was a solar cooker which cooks using the heat of the sun. They visited Muthaiti Primary School where they commissioned a water tank which was funded by Lucan Community College students through various fundraisers such as a quiz night, a sponsored silence, and many bake-sales. This water tank means that children do not have to walk a kilometre to get clean water. They also commissioned a water tank at Mitimingi Farmers Association which was also funded by Lucan Community College students. Gavin Kelly said “It was amazing to be able to go out and experience first hand a developing world country. This trip was a great experience for us all and I’m sure we will take it with us for the rest of our lives.”

Anything Goes

Lucan CC presents Cole Porter's musical "Anything Goes". The story depicts madcap antics aboard an ocean liner on a voyage from New York to London. The musical will be performed by the 2008/2009 Transition Year drama class. Doors open at 7.30pm with curtain up at 8.00pm nightly from Tuesday 5th May to Friday 8th May. Tickets cost €7 for students and €10 for adults. They can be purchased from Ms. Clifford or at the door on the night.

Self Help Development International

Lucan CC is delighted to report that the students involved in the Self Help Africa project have almost reached their fund raising goal! Gavin Kelly and Rebecca Ryan Lynch, who are traveling to Kenya for 8 days over the Easter holidays, with teacher Aisling Quirke, will experience first hand the great work this organisation is doing with funds raised.

In a bid to raise additional funds, a table quiz was held, in association with Lucan CC, in St. Andrew's Church Parish Centre, Lucan village, on Saturday 14th March at 8pm. The Quiz was well supported by locals and students of the College. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the fun, especially the innovative 'cola' tasting round! Thanks to all who supported this good cause.

Mr Tomi Reichental visits Lucan CC

Lucan CC was very honoured to have Tomi Reichental visit us on the 29th January, to speak to a number of senior history and German students about his life and experiences as a prisoner in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp during World War 2. Tomi Reichental first outlined the historical background to the Holocaust - tracing vital events such as the 'Kristallnacht' '(Night of Broken Glass) in November 1938, and ‘Die Endlösung’(the Final Solution) in 1941, to place his own experience in the context of the time. He then went on to explain his and his family's personal situation in Slovakia during the war years, and how partisan opposition to the German supported puppet government in Slovakia, caused a hardening of attitudes towards Slovakian Jews. This led to his family's incarceration in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp from 1944 to 1945. 13 members of Tomi Reichental's family were deported in November '44 after their arrest in Bratislava. 7 were sent to Buchenwald and only one survived. 6 members of the family, including Tomi were sent to Bergen Belsen, where Tomi's grandmother Rosalia perished. Altogether 35 members of Tomi's family were lost in the Holocaust. He described his experiences as a then 9/10 year old in Bergan-Belsen and the true horrors of what was involved. He poignantly told of his reunion with his father after the war ended, and how it became impossible to become accepted in Slovakia, and his eventual move to Britain. He came to Ireland in the 1960s for business reasons. Mr Reichental answered all the questions both students and staff addressed in great detail. It was a truly moving and thought provoking experience, one which we at Lucan CC are very grateful to Mr Reichental for sharing with us.
For more information contact The Holocaust Educational Trust of Ireland, which educates and informs about the Holocaust in order to address Anti-Semitism and all forms of racism and intolerance in Ireland.

5th Year Trip to beautiful Barcelona

On Monday 16th February a group of 35 students and three teachers, including their Year Head, left the grey skies of Dublin behind for a four day trip to sunny Barcelona. Despite an initial hiccup of a redirection to Stansted airport and a subsequent 2 hour delay, the group finally arrived in Reus airport, where they then boarded a bus for a further two hour drive to their accommodation in Lloret de Mar. The 4 star hotel in Lloret de Mar was a welcome sight after their lengthy journey!

Tuesday morning the group headed off on a tour of the sights of Barcelona, the highlight of which was Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia cathedral. To make the most of the sunshine the group then headed to a local supermarket to buy lunch for a picnic on Mont Juic, overlooking the city. On  Wednesday the group headed to Barcelona’s football stadium Camp Nou and later that day set out for Mont Serrat, where they travelled by cable car to the top of the mountain to visit the famous Black Virgin. On Thursday the group headed by bus to visit the Salvador Dalí museum and finally embarked on the final leg of their journey to Girona for a little last minute shopping and their flight home! As the pictures show, they seem to have had a great time!

Arts Week 2009

The annual Arts Week at Lucan CC was once again a roaring success. The week kicked off with workshops in drumming, juggling, cartooning, modern dance, magic and many other exciting activities. Each night, the hall was full to capacity, with students and visitors to the school, to enjoy a series of night time concerts. The Variety Show was held on monday night, with students from all years demonstrating their extraordinary talents in music, dance and singing. Tuesday night saw the teachers turn to show off their abilities. 'X Factor' came to Lucan, with judges Simone Cowell, Louise Walsh and Sharon Osbourne and special guest judges from each year group deciding that "Teach That" had the X factor! The audiance was entertained whilst the judges deliberated with performanes from the actors of the Cadbury ads, namely the drum playing gorilla and the schoolkids with the unusual eyebrow gymnastics! Wednesday night and the Battle of the Bands rocked the school, followed on Thursday night with a Valentine themed disco for all 1st Year students, organised by the Gluais team.

Friday was for many the highlight of the week, with our tradition of fancy dress for the day. The theme this year was "Movies & Musicals". As you can see from the pictures, there is no shortage of imagination and creativity in Lucan CC!!

Doodle for Google

5th Year Student Aoife Ruane took part in the recent "Doodle 4 Google" competition. Aoife's 'doodle' "The Children of Lir" was a contender as Google's new picture will appear on the famous web site for 24 hours on St. Patrick's Day 2009. Voting is now closed but you can log on to www.google.ie/doodle4google to see who wins!

Under 18 Soccer loss

The heroic Under 18 soccer team lost a dramatic final of the Metropolitan Leinster League in harrowing fashion. The boys, determined to take the trophy home to Lucan, started really brightly. They created chance after chance against a stunned Confey College team, but failed to convert any of their chances into goals in the first half.
The second half began where the first left off - with Lucan all over their opponents. The goal eventually arrived in the 61st minute, with Nabil Jamal poking home a deflected shot after much Lucan pressure. Lucan looked in the driving seat and the trophy was in their grasp - but fate was to intervene with Confey drawing level after Lucan CC mentally switched off for a second.
The players looked deflated after all their hard work had only left them level with 10 minutes to go. Worse was to come when disaster struck in the 92nd minute, with only seconds on the clock Confey scored what was to turn out to be the winner. When the final whistle went the despair was all too evident on all the Lucan faces - to have come so close and lost hurt them badly.
But the team played with the conviction and commitment that sets Lucan CC apart from all other schools, doing themselves and the school proud in their efforts. Well done to all the lads - and a sad farewell to those 6th years who will not be there next year to avenge the loss.
Lucan CC Team:
Paul Cully, Rob Dent, Elvis Kucuk, Matthew Tuite, Scott Gerety, Daniel Whitefield, Brian Connolly, Enda Fennell (c), Ciaran McHugh, Nabil Jamal, Darragh Mylod. Subs - Shane Lynch, Brendan Shaughnessy, Des Hartigan, Conor McLoughlin.

Lucan CC Badminton

Well done to all the Badminton players who participated in this years Dublin Schools League. A special well done to the U19 boys who progressed to the quarter-finals but were narrowly defeated by Wesley. This is the first year that Badminton has been offered as an extra-curricular sport and we are really proud of the dedication the students gave to training and league games. Any students who are interested in this sport can contact Ms Gallagher or Ms Gaffney.

U 18 soccer success

The under 18 boys soccer team beat Firhouse in the semi-final of the Leinster Metropolitan league. The game finished 0-0 after normal time and went to penalties after a tension filled extra time. Lucan eventually triumphed in the shootout after 9 penalties each, winning 6-5 in the end. The heroics of keeper Paul Cully and the calmness of Shane Lynch under pressure definitely kept the League Final dream for LCC alive.

BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2009

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition took place from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th January 2009.From over 1,200 project entries, only 500 were chosen. Lucan CC had 3 group entries this year, in three different categories with the following research titles " Computers and Dry Eye Syndrome", "Factors Affecting the Freezing Rate of Water" and "Are Teenagers Going Logo?".

Raafay Shehzad and Robert Neary were highly commended for their project "Factors Affecting the Freezing Rate of Water" in the Chemical and Physical Mathematical Sciences area. Louise Buckley and Rachael O'Neill investigated students' ability to identify popular brand names. According to the study on dry eye syndrome by Rachel Bridgette, Carol Gallagher and Ronan Healy, who monitored more than 60 students before and after they used a computer, people who sat further away were least affected. So watch how much time you spend staring at the computer screen - it can aggravate your eyes!

All first year students visited the Exhibition and enjoyed all the exciting projects and demonstrations. They had a great time, as you can see from the photos, and hopefully were inspired to enter the competition next year!

Student Council clean-up

The Student Council created a common room for 6th years to relax in during lunch and before supervised study. With the help of Mr Duffy and Ms Gallagher, the students gave up their October Mid-Term to paint and redecorate an area within the K2 room. The Councils next project is the redecoration of the 2nd/3rd year toilets during the February Mid-Term. Student council meetings are every Monday at lunch time in the guidance room. All students are welcome to attend.

Lucan Community College tops 3rd level feeder school "league tables" in Lucan area

Lucan Community College topped the recent Irish Times 3rd level feeder school poll in the Lucan area. The figures revealed that 89% of the schools 2007/2008 Leaving Certificate class went on to attend 3rd level colleges or universities.

The staff and students of Lucan Community College worked hard to achieve these excellent results and it is hoped that the ongoing commitment of both students and staff will continue to produce similar outcomes into the future.

Retirement function for teachers

Presentations and tributes were paid to teachers Irene O'Grady and Neil McKelvey on Friday, 28th November at Lutterlstown Castle Golf and Country Club marking the end of two very successful teaching careers. Heartfelt, emotional and often humorous stories of Irene and Neils' time in Lucan Community College, were related to the gathering by many members of staff and friends on the night.

These two wonderful teachers will be a huge loss to Lucan Community College and will be missed by both pupils and staff, especially their colleagues in the Religion and Science Departments.

Lucan Community College wish Irene and Neil long, happy and healthy retirements.

TYs raise huge sums for charity

Over the past weeks many Transition Year students have been helping out national charity organisations by selling JAsper pins (Juvenile Arthritis, Arthritis Ireland) and roses, teddies and wristbands for 'Rose Week' (Autism Ireland). Our students have even helped out in their own free time and on Saturdays.

TY charity

We would like to thank SuperQuinn SC for allowing our students raise money in and around their premises. €850 was raised for Arthritis Ireland selling JAsper pins, while over €2500 was raised for Autism Ireland during 'Rose Week'. Congratulations to all students involved.

The Quarter Finals of the Leinster 'A' Cup saw a tremendous battle between two equal sides. Ard Scoil na Trionide of Athy bravely fought back from 17 - 5 down to level the scores 17 all in the final 15 minutes. Try scorers for LCC were Daniel Malone, Kevin McBride (his 5th try in 3 matches) and Keith Moran (also 1 conversion). We were unfortunate that we lost Andrew McIntyre after only 3 minutes of the match to injury and Leslie Roche Condron also came off injured at half time. All players tackled excellently, especially in the second half when we had the hill adn wind against us.

Replay on Wednesday 5th November at 2pm in Banhall.

TY girls in inaugural workshop

All TY girls had the opportunity to participate in the inaugural 'Body Image' workshop series for Transition Year students. This workshop, run by Ciara Kirby, promoted social and personal development of the 'body' through self awareness by delving into perspectives from psychology, sociology, women's studies and media studies.

It was well received by all TY girls and many feel that this area of education about ones 'self' should be given more of a priority in senior cycle schooling.

TYs help with anti-litter campaign

South Dublin County Council's Environment section got a welcome hand when some of our Transition Year students went over to help re-launch the 'Bin your Gum or €150!' campaign in SuperQuinn Shopping Centre. They helped give out pens and do surveys with the customers and well as getting their photograph taken with local County Councillors and TDs! So 'bin your gum'... banned in school anyway!

Good start to the sporting year

Basketball U16 boys had their first ever win in late September, against Skerries CC in the opening round of the league. The seniors also did the double over Skerries and are turning into a formidable outfit. Hopefully they will deliver the goods again this year. The U-16s won again, beating the much fancied Ashbourne CC, unfortunately the senior lost by 5 points.

The Junior Camogie team also won on their first match outing of the year and it was great to see over 30 girls, including many 1st years, laying down a marker to follow on from the successes of the last two years.

Our senior boys rugby XV had a tremendous start to the Leinster Cup campaign. A injury depleted team fronted up against a big St MacDara's pack in North Kildare and destroyed them 32 - 0. Everything seemed to click after about 20 minutes and the tries started coming thick and fast. Scorers were Kevin McBride (2 tries and 1 conversion), Shane Lynch, Anthony Lee, Aaron Flynn and Daniel Malone. Captain Luke O' Reilly produced a dazzling display at outhalf and the likes of Daniel Harman, Leslie Roche-Condron, Colin Bryne, Colum Folen, Alan Walsh, Alan Kelly, Richard Seaman, Thomas Hawthorne, Kieran Lee and Aaron Courtney were all fantastic in both attack and defense.

Soccer has finally gotten off the ground in Term 1 with the U16 team entered into the South division winning their 1st match also.

Unfortunately, the much fancied U16 hurling team were well beaten 5-15 to 4-4 in the 1st round of the round robin league/cup.

Badminton as a student sport is again up and running and Olympic handball is a new sport to us which has also been started up.

Come out and join in the fun everyday after school...there's always some sport or activity to get involved in in Lucan Community College.

Ms. Carol Meehan R.I.P.

All in our school community was deeply saddened by the news of the untimely death of friend and teacher Carol Meehan (Ennis). Carol, who had battled a long illness over many years, fought bravely in the face of great personal adversity and always displayed a committed and professional attidude throughout. An assistant Principal, Maths and P.E. teacher, Carol taught in Lucan Community College for two decades. She will be sorely missed by all.

Leaving Cert results

Congrats to all of our Leaving Cert students, especially those who took the LCA and LCVP exams too. There were very many happy faces on Wednesday 13 August when the envelopes were ripped open to reveal the best set of results in a long time. There were a huge number of students with A and B grades in many subjects and really a tiny minority of fails out of all of the different papers taken. We congratulate the top students obviously who achieved highly but we also feel just as proud for those students who worked as diligently and achieved their best, whatever that was.

The points systems comes and goes but gaining the actual grade is what matter. Remember that the natioanl average is around 300 each year, give or take! On this note we have to again applaud the astonishing results of Katie Maher, who gained top marks of 600 points (6 A1s as well as 2 more A2s)! Well done Katie.

We wish the class of 2008 all the best in your future. Enjoy the debs!

LC4 Vivaldi's Glorious concert

LC4, otherwise known as the Lucan Community College Chamber Choir under the baton of Ciaran Duffy performed Vivaldi's Gloria and many more choral favourites including Handel's Hallelujah Chorus and Zadok the Priest, Mozart's Ave Verum and Godall's The Lord is my Shepherd on a beautiful Sunday evening in St Andrew's Church in late May, all proceeds going to the Self-help Africa charity.

Vivaldi concert

The church was packed and the audience was entralled from the very first chord to the last as Ciaran Duffy led the choir with help from a small orchestra, filling the auditorium with the most beautiful choral and orchestral timbre. The choir was joined by teachers Ms Dunbar, Mr Billington and Mr Carey and also by Mr Purcell (who sang, played piano and trumpet and conducted!). Soloists in the very difficult Vivaldi were Katie Maher and Emily Dwyer and they also sung the popular Time to Say Goodbye. After the trememdous concert, some lovely words and sentiments were offered by 6th year Year Head Mr Don Nichol and they were much appreciated by the whole audience and especially by the students and the six 6th years leaving the choir.

Well done again Mr Duffy and all the choir.

Fab 4 beats Muckross Park

Round 6 - the last 16 in Ireland. Posh south-side D4 school. Monday out working on 'work experience'...! No problem for these four TY students of Lucan Community College. What a win!

Now through to the last 8 in Ireland... the furthest Lucan CC has ever been in this national debating competition. Eoin (who's offering his speech writing services to Hilary Clinton), Rebecca, Gavin and Ruth (who should be President - don't argue with this girl!) performed brilliantly again. Paddy Power has suspended all betting on Lucan's Fab 4 (+2 Liz and Ciaran) winning this competition at a stroll.

Well done...keep it up!

Lucan CC's Concern debate team of Owen McCabe, Ruth Malone, Rebecca Ryan-Lynch tutored by Ms Dunbar and Mr Duffy won through to the Last 16 (in Ireland) by beating Ardscoil Ris of Griffith Ave, Dublin 9, whom last year's team also beat at this Round 5 stage.

The motion for Round 6 is that 'Ireland should boycott the Beijing Olympics' and our team will be up against the girls of Muckross Park College of Donnybrook, Dublin 4.

Good luck.

Senior rugby update

We have never played so many matches before in such a short space of time. Four matches in three weeks. We only won one against St Peter's, Dunboyne in the NUIM school's Cup which put us into the top seeded draw for the competition against much more experienced opposition in the way of Leinster Development 'A' Cup winners and 'B' Cup semifinalists, Maynooth PP and Salesians of Celbridge. We very nearly beat Salesians and only lost in the last minute of the match 17-13. All players put in some very good performances in three of the four matches. We also narrowly lost to Castleknock College in the 3rd's league and this gave us tremendous confidence going into the NUIM Cup. Daniel Malone is on a scoring spree and Luke O'Reilly is scoring well with the boot too.

There is at least one more game to be played against Maynooth PP in the NUIM Cup and we also have to play our derby against 'the brothers' CBS in the league. We were very disappointing agsint Hartstown CS in the Leinster 'A' shield and never really got going. They were much more up for it on the day (10am) and good luck to them.

Congrats to Keith Moran who recently joined up Barnhall and was promoted to the team and played a blinder for their thrilling Leinster U-18 Premier semi-final win against Naas. A blue jersey of Leinster shouldn't be too far away...

VEC Festival of Music 2008

This year Lucan CC will have three entries in the Co Dublin VEC Festival of Music concert which will take place in the National Concert Hall on Tuesday 11th March. This is the 10th anniversary of this annual concert and we have had many great performances from our school gracing the stage of the National Concert Hall since the beginning.

Adam Behan, a 6th year music student, will perform 'Drifting' - a brilliant guitar (and rhythm) piece. Mr Purcell's Leaving Certificate music class with the help of Mr Duffy will perfom a very difficult 6 part jazzy a-capella vocal arrangement of 'My Funny Valentine' and Colm, Niall and Gavin Kelly will perfom and sing Cohen's 'Allelujah'.

Good luck to all and enjoy.

Great rugby win over Castleknock College

Our formidable junior rugby team continued on their winning ways in the 3rds league, beating Castleknock College away from home in the opening encounter of this league, 29 points to 15.

Our second match against Balbriggan CS unfortunately saw us come out on the wrong side of a brave battle with a very under strenght team of only 15 players. 3rd year Captain Andrew McIntyre is still on a scoring spree - scoring against Castleknock and adding 2 more tries against Balbriggan.

Teachers? Students? All for charity...

Self Help Africa, the Irish development aid organisation was again helped out by our school with some unusual fundraising on Wednedsay Jan 23rd. A non-uniform day was had by most students on the condition that the teachers of LCC donned the beautiful uniform of the students for the day!

charity day

And many did... (it helped us to feel much, much younger and we discovered that you could never suffer from the cold weather wearing the extremely warm pull-overs!). It was very disconcerting to see 'students' walking into the staffroom all day long!

Some cheeky 6th year students decided to try to impersonate some teacher's attire also -which went down very well also. Well done everyone.

TY Carlingford trip
On Wednesday 28th November most of the TY students went to Carlingford adventure centre in Louth for two days and one night! It was an early morning for all as we left for our trip at 7:30 in the morning. When we arrived we were greeted by very friendly staff and then were grouped up to begin the day's events. The land based included high ropes, a challenge course, orienteering, rock climbing and a night walk up the mountains. The water based included kayaking, pier jumping and raft building.
The challenge course was very enjoyable with many activities to complete in exchange for precious jewels. In order to complete the tasks, team work was very important. Some of the tasks involved crossing water so a few people ended up wet and muddy at the end. Some tasks were quite difficult, such as the pipe task and the spider web. But everyone enjoyed the challenge course in the end.

TY trip to Carlingford

The high ropes were an amazing experience for everyone who was brave enough to try it. It was great to see two certain teachers jumping from the leap of faith which was a great achievement for both of them. The leap of faith was a terrifying experience. You had to climb a 30ft pole and then stand on a very small platform. If this wasn't scary enough, the pole was shaking as you tried to get your balance. You then had to jump from the pole and try to catch a trapeze which was roughly about one metre away from the pole.

TY trip to Carlingford

At nine o clock at night we set off on our night walk. The group leaders led us up the mountain which was very tiring! We went through a very small tunnel which was quite scary and sore! We had a bit of a sing-song while up the mountain which was very funny. We were divided into two groups and one of them was quite unlucky as the locals decided to play a prank by egging them. This still didn't dampen the spirits as a great night was enjoyed by all.

Even though it was in the end of November, many of us braved the elements and took part in the water games. We were divided into two teams of nine and we both built a raft and then we raced them. After the race some pier jumping took place. This was good craic even though the water was as cold as ice. Also the groups got to go kayaking. This was a very cold experience and some people could just not handle it. Some teachers also took part in this. It was great to see that when some people got into a spot of difficulty the staff were very helpful and came to the rescue.

TY trip to Carlingford

The hostel was great as it had many things to keep everyone amused such as pool, volleyball and table tennis. The television was very helpful as we all got to watch the match. The food was very tasty and the rooms were clean and comfortable. All members of staff were friendly and delightful and it was an enjoyable trip for all. We were lucky to have the extra lie in on the next day after the trip as everyone was wrecked!

League title for Lucan CC junior camogie team

Dublin Schools Div.3 League Final
Lucan Community College      4-4
Holy Faith, Clontarf              1-1

After the disappointment of last year’s final defeat, the Lucan CC girls regained the junior league title. The game was played in perfect conditions at O’Toole Park. The final score line didn’t quite reflect a tight and hard fought game which needed top level performances from all players to ensure a Lucan victory over a well trained and committed team from Clontarf.

Holy Faith made a better start and were unlucky with a number of scoring chances. Ceili McErlean made some great saves in the Lucan goal and the defence did well to keep their opponents at bay. Tega Osivwemu, Michelle Kelly, and Aoife Dodrill were doing great work at this stage. Soon Laura Murtagh and Emma Cooney gained the upper hand at midfield and Amy Martin opened the scoring with a well taken goal. After some great work by Lorna Sexton and Siobhan Grimes, Grace Mulhern added a second goal. Kate White was also making her presence felt with two superb long range points.

Lucan faced into the second half with a comfortable 2-2 to 0-0 lead. However Clontarf never gave up, but a third Lucan goal all but secured a victory. Controversially, the referee did not award another Lucan goal which had clearly crossed the line. Despite the best efforts of Clodagh Flanagan and Clare Rigney, Holy Faith opened their scoring with an unstoppable shot for goal. Siobhan Grimes had the final say with a brilliant goal, capping off a player of the match performance by her. At the final whistle the Lucan supporters were ecstatic as they cheered coach Marion Freeman and her young team off the pitch. Team captain Emma Cooney accepted the winner’s trophy on behalf of the Lucan CC team.

Santa's party at LCC

Dear Santa,

Thanks for dropping by at the Lucan Community College Christmas Santa Party for us (children of the staff of LCC). The party was in full swing when you arrived with two huge red sacks full of presents. The elf helpers (5th year Gluais team) were great to play with and helped entertain all of us excited children. We screamed when you were spotted struggling with 2 heavy sacks full of pressies through the Millenium Garden -sorry, there's no chimney in the Library!

The food was delicious and there were even a few of our parents (choc-aholic teachers) spotted sneaking rice-krispy buns and cakes out of the library and hiding them in their lockers!

Well done Santa! A great afternoon was had by all of us and even put our parents in a good mood too! Please tell Rudolph to hurry up and get better from his flu - he needs to be okay by Christmas Eve to carry all of our presents, especially the Nintento Wiis!

Thanks,

Kids of LCC staff

Retirement function for caretaker John Dobbs

Presentations and tributes were paid to caretaker John Dobbs on Friday, 19th October at Lutterlstown Castle Golf and Country Club marking the end of a career of caring for students, teachers and staff of Lucan Community College for the last 30 years.

Heartfelt, emotional and often humorous stories of John Dobbs’ time in Lucan CC was related to the gathering by many members of staff and friends. John is and always has been a ‘people person’ who treated everyone equally and with huge respect and this is truly reflective of the huge impact John, our local Lucan native, has had on our community college.

We will miss you, and a huge 'Thank you' and goodluck from everyone here in LCC.

TY history -walking tour of Lucan

On the 16th of November the TY history students got a break from the books and the classroom and took their Historian skills out into the open with a historic walk through Lucan with a guided tour by Mary Mulhall, the author of ‘Treasures of Lucan.’

The students visited many different places all over the Lucan area and learned about the different places in their locality which some didn’t even know existed before. We visited King John’s bridge, the oldest bridge in Ireland, from there we moved on to St Finian’s ruined church which when we saw it we had the usual shout ‘that’s our school crest!’.

We then went across the road and visited a more recent bit of history, a time capsule that was buried in the year 2000 for the millennium by all seven churches in the locality. Walking to our next place to visit Esker Graveyard the rain bearing clouds were drawn away and the sun shone down. Taking a rest in the graveyard we were told about some interesting facts about the graveyard and how a wall spilt the graveyard in two and that people of the different religion were forbidden to cross the line.
Travelling down the steep hill we stopped at a wonderful viewpoint just opposite the old school were we had a wonderful view of the Lucan village and the domain.

We then headed toward our last visit to the Lucan Weir were Mary again told us about the history that surrounded us and told us about the old mills that were around back in the old days. With our time coming to an end we all headed back to the school and thanked Mary for her time.

Student Council

The Lucan Community College Council has been growing from strength to strength since its revival, by Mr Duffy and Ms Gallagher, in September 2006.
It is comprised of representatives from each year that act as a voice for the students by liaising with teachers, parents and the board of management to achieve a pleasant and co-operative working environment.

An executive committee is elected at the beginning of each school year to oversee the day to day running of the Student Council. The committee members for this year are Brian Gibson and Tara-Leigh White (PR officers), Cathal Dunne (Treasurer), Emily Dwyer (Secretary), Owen McCabe (Vice-Chairperson), and Leanne Caulfield (Chairperson).
Student Council meetings are held each Monday at lunchtime and additional meetings are often held during other weekday lunchtimes. Each class representative attends these meetings and is responsible for presenting the opinions, comments and any issues that his/her class may have to the student council. The Student council then attempt to resolve these issues a well as working on other projects that are of concern to students.

student council

One of the main issues that arose earlier in the school year was the condition of the school toilets. Many students felt that the toilets needed some redecoration. The Student Council came up with the idea to redecorate the toilets according to a theme as it was felt that students would appreciate this and so treat the toilets with respect. It was decided to redecorate the senior toilets as an experiment and to redecorate the rest of the toilets if the experiment proved sucessful.

All senior students were given the opportunity to vote for the theme in which they would prefer to have the toilets decorated. “Hollywood” proved to be the most popular theme and so the Student Council got down to work planning the project. Student Council members and its liaising teachers spent several days of the October midterm break redecorating the toilets, Hollywood style. It was not an easy task but through hard work and team effort, they saw the project to the end. The toilets were then unveiled to the student and teachers when they returned to school the following week. Everyone agrees that the delighted reaction and positive feedback to the finished product made all the hard work really seem worthwhile!

The student council is already busy planning another project and is working on ideas for other projects to be completed after Christmas. The Student Council is now an integral part of the school community and will no doubt continue to strengthen from year to year.

A Chamber Choir Christmas

Carols and Christmas songs a plenty. The internationally aclaimed school chamber choir, LC4, under the direction of Maestro Duffy, is carolling in many events this Christmas time. A carol service in St Mary's in Leixlip, an orchestral choral carol extravaganza in St Andrew's church in Lucan and, of course, our own carol service are some of the events where the lucky audience will hear the beautiful resonances of these experienced (and some not so experienced - as in some new male teachers in the bass line!) choristers.

carol service

Pictured is Mr Purcell and students from LC4 at the professional recording of some carols for the RTE Lyric FM 'Carols for Christmas' competition. A recording we made of O Holy Night with soloists Emily Dwyer and Gavin Kelly was aired on the RTE radio station on Niall Carroll's early evening programme 'Lyric Drivetime'.

Other photos are from the fantastic and atmospheric carol services in which we performed in St Mary's Church, Leixlip and our own carol concert with orchestra in St Andrew's Church, Lucan.

Class Camus history trip to Newgrange

Class Camus went to Newgrange on a trip with their teachers Ms Murphy, Ms Healy, Mr Kavanagh and Ms McCarthy. It was great! We learned a lot. Newgrange is over 5,000 years old. Older than the pyramids in Egypt. It contains about 200 tonnes of stones. On the 21st of December every year the sun shines through a box  above the door and lights up the whole tomb. That is the secret of Newgrange. It would be great to see.

Newgrange is a megalithic passage tomb in Ireland near the river Boyne. There are three huge passage tombs there, called Knowth, Dowth And Newgrange. We had a great time!!

John Dobbs local history talk to TY Students

On Thursday 8th and Friday 9th of December, the retired caretaker of Lucan Community College, Mr John Dobbs returned to the school to give a talk about the local history of the school and Lucan to Ty History Students.

Firstly he talked about the work situation in Lucan in the past. In days gone by Hills Mills, Shackletons Mills and CPI were the largest employers in the area and there was a large factory on the grounds of the estate we now call Woodview.

He gave an insight into the past of L.C.C informing us that the technical school in the village was the start of the school we have today. Students weren’t impressed that objections from nuns in St Joesphs school in the village helped in the first refusal for planning permission for the new school.

Next on the agenda was entertainment. What was there to do in Lucan in the past? Would you believe that where the Ulster Bank stands today there was a cinema calle ’The Premiere’ ? Just imagine heading to the village rather than Liffey Valley to see a movie! Also where the statoil garage is today, there used to be a ballroom!  Another thing Mr Dobbs laughed about was the fact that you could get the tram from Lucan to town for about one penny. Now that beats the 70c on a bus any day!

Overall, this was an excellent and informative talk and we would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ very much to John Dobbs for coming in to talk to us.

Green Schools

At Lucan Community College, the Green Flags for schools programme is in progress. At the end of September, a meeting was held to find out how many people wanted to be involved. At the beginning, not many students turned up but gradually the numbers increased as more people came to know about it. Now our committee consists of around 20 students and 2 teachers. We have a meeting every week where we discuss our progress and future development. We have organised ourselves into groups. Each group is assigned to clean twice a day after lunch breaks.

Since the start of the programme there has been an immense improvement with the reduction of litter throughout our school. We recently got a compost bin that we have just put in use. One of our teachers has taken responsibility in emptying the waste into it at the end of each day. This is helping greatly because the Home Economics classes produce a lot of compost waste as do our students who eat fruit during break times that would otherwise have gone into normal bins.  And also, it is useful for the canteen.

During our recent meetings we have concluded that most of the rubbish is collected around the lockers and the bins that are available aren’t used properly. We hope to rectify this problem by blocking the areas underneath the lockers. We plan to ask our woodwork teachers to help us carry out this task. As for the bins, we have come up with a solution for them too. We plan to allocate different coloured bins for different recycling material eg: green bins for paper and cardboard, blue for bottles and plastic etc. We hope to re-paint some of the existing bins green which will add to awareness and hopefully add to the longevity of these bins. Along with this, we’re hoping to design posters for the bins so students know how to make better use of them.

We feel there is still a lot more that can be done but we are tackling each problem one by one so we don’t overload ourselves with too much work and become tired of it. The reason why we got involved in this programme was to create a cleaner environment in our school. We hope to achieve our goals within the next year and hope to gain more members. Our co-ordinators are Ms Feeney and Ms Gaffney.

Rugby on the rise

Lucan Community College’s senior rugby team got off to a prosperous looking start as they defeated Tallaght Community College and reached the 2nd round of the Leinster Schools Development A Cup, for the first time in five years. This eager team played well, acting as a unit to leave the score tallied at 18-7. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in their game against St. Fintan’s of Sutton, who were last year’s cup winners.

Training twice weekly, Lucan has been gaining a lot of experience from coach  Romaim Gibert of Barnhall. Spirits have been high lately, with raised attendance and surging enthusiasm. Captain Robert Lester lead the team into two warm up matches against Confey College -  10-10 draw and the next day against Scoil Dara, Kilcock, going down by 2 points 10-12. On a wet, windy and muddy day, the LCC seniors yet again triumphed over Tallaght CS – 7-0, in the 1st round of the Leinster ‘A’ shield. With the backing of a new sponsor, sights have been set high for the shield. The 2nd round will take place in January along with the NUIM school's league.

The LCC junior team have been training excellently of late. It was the junior’s match against Confey College Leixlip though, where their true ability shone through. At half time Lucan trailed 5-22, but with a distinct level of optimism and confidence, they came back with a tremendous display to defeat Confey 24-22 with two late tries by 3rd year, Daniel Harman. The enthusiasm was evident in numbers with 35 players out, hoping to make the 22 man squad. The team’s skill can be credited to the twice weekly training sessions with coaches Sean Morrissey and Andrew Purcell.

This winter, despite the rain, darkness and cold, the teams are as determined as ever to succeed and with their current attitude it seems they will do so.

Juniors just miss 1/4 final spot

The LCC junior rugby team fought bravely against a burly St Brendan's Bray team but ultimately couldn't draw level or beat the much bigger opponent's in Barnhall RFC. This 3rd round Leinster 'A' cup match was our 1st match of the season as both Tallaght CS and Chanel College were too scared to field teams against us! The twice weekly skills and physical training regime with coaches Morrissey and Purcell helped gel this inexperienced but dedicated team.

junior rugby

Captain and man of the match Andrew McIntyre lead by example, making foraging breaks into the opposition half. Every one played exceptionally well, especially with bone-crushing tackles in defense and it was a close but brilliant match to watch. 5-5 at half time, a superb try by iron-man 2nd centre Thomas Hawthorne helped by the ball hungry forwards. One dodgy decision and a try was awarded to Brendan's and then another - we felt hard done by.

junior rugby

A superb last 10 minutes saw Kieran Lee pop up for a try in the corner after a run and chase by sub Aaron Courtney. Other notable players were scrummie Alan Dardis, prop Daniel and 2nd rows Jacob and Leslie. Well done lads - keep up the good work!

Maths Week 2007

Coinciding with the anniversary of William Rowan Hamilton’s discovery of quaternions on 16th October 1843 while walking along the Royal Canal, Maths week ran from Monday 12th to Friday 19th October this year. Maths puzzles and biscuits in the staff room raised teachers’ awareness of the event and many teachers linked maths to their subject area throughout the week. Some students even had a maths class in French!

The Maths Games Room ran all week at lunch time with students buildling with polydron shapes and playing a variety of board games involving maths skills. Of course none of the students came along just for the sweets!!
The poster competition for 1st years and TY students resulted in a fantastic display of mathematics all around the school. Some first year posters even provoked interesting discussion among 6th years!

The Prism maths competition was run during the week with a large number of students participating and the Hamilton online competition (http://www.hamilton.ie/mathschallenge/index.htm) is now underway. Open to all students in the school, it is based on problem solving skills. Someone has to win a Blackberry in 10 weeks time. Last year it was a first year student. This year – who knows?

Prizes for in-school competitions will be awarded soon – many students already received a Maths Week pen for their participation in the events.
Thanks to all of the teachers in the Maths department who organised the week’s events and to all of the teachers and students who really got into the spirit of things.

What do robots, movies and juggling have in common?

The answer, surprisingly, is mathematics! 29 students from Lucan Community College visited NUI Maynooth to see demonstrations of Maths in action. These talks were organised as part of National Maths week by Dr. Fiacra O Cairbre (NUIM). Dr. Carl Bracken, a professional juggler and mathematician (UCD) showed how to use number patterns to invent new juggling tricks, actually demonstrating each one. Seamus Kelly applied transformation geometry in the form of translations to animations for movies. Dr. Bob Lawlor’s robotic dog was a big hit as he introduced students to binary arithmetic and explained how the dog could recognise and find a ball. Students said: “I liked watching the robot dog. I think it is very smart: how it can ‘see’ objects and be told what to look for.” (Glenn) “I liked the juggler – he was amazing. I thought he had great skill and was very talented. He showed us the maths behind juggling in diagrams.” (Damien) “I learned how you use maths in everyday life even when you don’t know you are using it.” (Olivia)

Senior rugby team beat Tallaght CS

Lucan CC 18 - 7 Tallaght CS

Lucan finally won through to the 2nd round of the Leinster School's Development 'A' Cup after five years of failing at this first hurdle. This well drilled team handled the strong Tallaght side with ease and coped admirably with the terrible weather conditions.

Shane Lynch scored our two tries, with a conversion and two penalties by Luke O'Reilly. All 22 in the squad played their part, with TY Colin Byrne and 6th year Captain Robert Lester to the fore. Other outstanding performances were by Keith Moran, Richard Seaman, Adam Behan and Niall Rigney coming on as an impact sub.

Well done lads and to coaches Morrissey, Purcell and Romain Gibert, our new French (Barnhall YDO) coach.

Unfortunately, our 2nd round match against last year's Cup winners St. Fintan's of Sutton proved a step too far in terms of backs skill's especially. Our forwards were an equal match, especially Colin Byrne, and at outhalf, a man of the match display in defense, Luke O'Reilly, who put in a tremendous amount of tackles.

Debs Ball 2007

The annual Deb's Ball was another great success. Moran's Red Cow Hotel was the venue as it has been for the past number of years and everyone had a ball. The pimped up limos and Hummer's arrived long not too after the bus had left the majority of past pupils and their dates at the venue.

It was again great to see so many teachers and parent's association members arrive early to take part in all the festivities too. We are so lucky in Lucan CC to be able to have such a great relationship between parents, students and teachers and this can be seen especially well on such a great night as this.

The food was fantastic, especially the breakfast at 6am and everyone was dancing and singing all night long.

Congratulation must be given to the excellent behaviour by all our recent past students and present students attending as dates! We have a great reputation in Lucan CC and it is always a pleasure for teachers to meet past students in a social gathering such as this. Good luck in your futures, 'Class of 2007'.

6th year geography field trip

Grey damp skies on this freezing cold morning welcomed the 60 Leaving Cert Geography students and four teachers who travelled to Kippure House and Education centre in Co. Wicklow. The wild but mature estate boasts the source of the river Liffey not too far from the Sally Gap. The students went to survey rivers for their Geography fieldwork project which is worth 20% of their total examination.

Academic prepartation had to be done in the centre before the hikes to the river and tributaries with worksheets to be filled out and graph and data analysis and measuring instruments to be understood. Waterproofs and waders were worn so that all students could participate in the gathering and collecting of data. Every possible measurement, water volume, velocity flow, gradient difference and rock analysis were achieved standing in the freezing streams and fast-flowing rivers.

While it might of been a little cold, everyone enjoyed the practical sessions which makes learning so much fun. The facilitators in the centre were excellent. Thanks also to Mr Brett, Ms L. Quirke, Ms Bean and Mr Purcell for travelling too.

LCC rugby Juniors win replay

Eight days can make a lot of difference in sport. From a thrilling 5 all draw against Hartstown last week, to a comprehensive 22-6 thumping of the same team a week later on a heavy King's Hospital back pitch made coaches Morrissey and Purcell smile. They needed it after LCC Seniors were beaten in their semi-final clash of the NUIM cup against the excellent Maynooth PP on Wednesday.

From the outset we had the upper hand. Ball retention, multi-phrase support play and quick off-loading as well as Kevin McBride's quick-thinking 1st minute try knocked the stuffing out of the opposition. The Hartstown scrum was far superior to ours but their scrum-half was constantly harried and hassled by the diminutive but superb Aaron Courtney. At the breakdown he got our speedster backs Fox, Kucik, Dore, Kelly and Alia breaking the gain line every time.

The forwards and especially the backrow and Captain Colin Byrne played a terrific game as did Leslie Roche-Condron and Andrew McIntyre. McBride scored 2 tries, Kucik, Dore and Alia touch down for one try each. Hartstown's only scores were a brilliant drop goal from the halfway line by their No. 10 and one other penalty. All subs had a great game as did the excellent Leinster Branch referee.

Rock School

The fantastic school rock gig was a part of an enterprise project held by a number of students in transition year. Wednesday 17th January at 6.30pm: the thrusting thud of crashing cymbals, rocking riffs and skilful singing echoed through the edifice.

It was a great success with large numbers turning up to hear the wonderful varied styles of performances.

One of the students involved in this project Roisin Healy said “I’m really looking forward to the gig; it should be a good night and a lot of fun!”. It was.

Lucan CC debate team win...again!

After easing through the 'group of death' league stages of this year's All Ireland Concern debating competition, our superb team destroyed the four good speakers from Baldoyle's Pobalscoil Neasain. This is where the nerves start to tingle as a loss in the knockout round (only 51 schools left) means 'bye-bye' and adiós!

Mr Duffy and Ms Dunbar were on edge during the day, but no fear as Sharon, Katie, Joanna and Cathal are on a great winning roll. Their magnificent opposition to the motion about the West's war on Aids left the audience (mostly made up of Lucan CC supporters) breathless and speechless. Well done to all involved.

Roll on the next round... They are now through to the last 26 schools in Ireland.

Members of the Senior Debating Team are: Sharon Hickey (Captain), Joanna Butcher, Katie Maher and Cathal Dunne with Ms Dunbar and Mr Duffy organising.

The 2007 VEC Festival of Music

Three acts from Lucan CC auditioned for solo slots in next March's National Concert Hall Co. Dublin VEC Festival of Music concert. Katie Maher and Emily Dwyer, music students from 5th year and no strangers to the platform of the National Concert Hall themselves, singing the famous duet by Lakmé, the Flower Duet, received notification that they are to perform in front of the 1200 people in the audience. 60 music students will perform a medley from 'Phantom of the Opera' also and they will also help out in the massed choirs.

Junior rugby team fail to beat Hartstown CS

5-5. A low scoring draw did little to justify the excellent skill and endeavour that embellished this 1st round Leinster 'A' shield match, played in hurricane conditions in Coolmine RFC. Lucan were by far the better team, especially in the 1st half when we were camped in the opposition '22'. Nothing came of this, and immediately after the half-time whistle and against a gale, were found ourselves a try down. A poor Lucan scrum, 10 metres out from our own line, led to an even poorer technical decision by the ref. He handed Hartstown a scrum when it should have been our put-in, if not even a free-kick. Out of this they scored in the corner.

Captain Kevin McBride led from the front and initiated a huge comeback. Our lightening backs broke clean through their defensive cover on four occasions only to see the ball go to ground or go forward with the decisive pass. Finally a forward rumble, with Andrew McCormack to the fore, right up to Hartstown's line saw the hard tackling 2nd year, Andrew McIntyre, burst over for a well deserved try. What happened next was a fiasco!

As Paul Cully lined up to take the easy conversion the wind blew the ball off the tee. Hartstown illegally rushed out and the wrong decision was made to not allow another conversion attempt to be taken. These poor decisions really gazumped us. Anybody could have won the game in the 6 minutes of injury time, but the chances weren't taken.

There's always next week! Man of the match was Colin Byrne from class Hyde with excellent performances from Aaron Courtney, Elvis Kucik, Conor Dore and Leslie Roche-Condron.

Christmas arrives at Lucan CC

A festive spirit quietly crept around the corridors of our college in the last week as 1st, 2nd and 5th year students furiously finished their Christmas exams. The sound of 3rd and 6th year music students practising 'Star Carol', 'Ring, Christmas Bells' and among others, 'Walking in the Air', could be heard drifting through the fog.

The sound of silence didn't last long when exams were finished on Thursday. Ms Casey and the 6th year tutors organised a party for all 6th years and LCA2s in the Home Ec kitchen.

The annual carol service in St Patrick's Church rounded of a very successful term. This is the only time of the year when all the school comes together in one place. An excellent atmosphere was created and maintained by all - well done to the choir, readers and music and RE departments. The staff then got ready for their Christmas party while the 1st years looked forward to their Christmas disco to end their first term on a high and loud note.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY,

BEST WISHES FOR 2007

German debating team win again

Katie Maher, Emily Dwyer, Karen Walsh and Sharon Hickey under the guidance of Ms Colette Clarke won their 2nd round match against Sutton Park very comfortably. The motion that the LCC team were in favour of was that 'watching TV makes you stupid and violent'. Through humourous, intelligent and concise dialogue and rebuttal the motion was passed unanimously. Our team are now through to the next round where another team will be put to the sword by our outstanding orators. Thanks to Cathal Dunne, our fantastic Chairman and timekeeper.

Dublin Colleges basketball final
Lucan Community College 45
Stafford College 32

Lucan Community College had an excellent victory over Strafford College to claim the Senior Colleges Basketball Cup. This was an extremely close match with both teams showing great skill. At the end of the first quarter Lucan were ahead.

As the second quarter began Lucan seemed more focused and out classed Strafford. Lucan scored well in this quarter as did Strafford but many of Strafford’s shots were blocked by some great defending from Blazio Sempebwa. John Lambert created some great opportunities and scored some great points. Gerrard McGarrell also played superb during this quarter. Half time score: 12 (Strafford) to 16 (Lucan)
Kirk Doyle was consistently making space for himself as was Colm Larkin.

However the third quarter saw Lucan fall drastically behind. They had fallen behind by nine points but some inspirational words from coaches Lorraine Quirke and Bob Lambert saw Lucan taking control of the game and going in front of Strafford.
Lucan dominated the final quarter as Strafford seemed to lose hope. Lucan drastically increased the lead, and the huge crowd of Lucan supporters were going crazy during the final 20 seconds as the final whistle approached.

'Concern' debating team

Lucan Community College has a very fine and proud tradition of debating and public speaking, not just in the English language we might add!

The present Senior Debating Team is no exception to this.

Having successfully reached the last 64 schools in the country last year, the senior team is progressing well in this year’s Concern Debates competition. The team was drawn in the same group as Clongowes Wood College, Mount Sackville College and Castleknock College. In the first round Lucan was up against Mount Sackville debating the motion that global commitments on the environment are a load of hot air. Lucan was victorious in opposing this motion and won by a majority verdict of 2 to 1.

In the second round of the competition, Lucan Community College was host to the motion that The UN belongs on the ash heap of history. Again, Lucan Community College was victorious in proposing this motion, defeating Castelknock College, again by majority decision.

It all rested on the third and final group debate which saw Lucan Community College pitted against Clongowes Wood College and Mount Sackville against Castleknock. The results of both were of tantamount importance in deciding on the winner of the group as both Castleknock and Lucan both had 4 points going into the final round. Lucan was again impressive in defeating their Kildare opponents, discussing the motion that the Bebo generation cares little for the developing world. Lucan won again by a majority and the result of the other debate became crucial to us all, we thought! Castleknock won unanimously which saw them elevated outright to the top of the table with 7 as opposed to Lucan’s 6 points. However, as Lucan Community College has won all three of its debates they will automatically progress to the knockout stage of the competition which will commence early in the New Year.

Members of the Senior Debating Team are: Sharon Hickey (Captain), Joanna Butcher, Katie Maher and Cathal Dunne.

Santa comes to L.C.C.

The Lucan Community College Christmas Santa Party for our staff's children was in full swing when Santa arrived with a huge red sack full of presents. The elf helpers (5th year Gluais team) were on hand to play with, face paint and entertain the excited children. Screams were heard when Santa was spotted running through the Millenium Garden - we don't have a chimney!

The food was delicious and there were even a few choc-aholic teachers spotted sneaking rice-krispy buns and cakes out of the staffroom and hiding them in their lockers for the next day's morning break!

Well done Santa! A great afternoon was had by all.

Senior Rugby beat Scoil Dara, Kilcock

Finally a win! An impressive one at that: 17 points to Scoil Dara’s (Kilcock) 5. This quarter final match in the new N.U.I. Maynooth Cup school’s competition was played in the university campus on Wednesday in awful weather conditions. It suited Lucan CC’s powerful pack with the ever impressive Ger Crosby bursting over for a hat-trick of tries. One only of the tries was converted by Luke O’Reilly, the others being blown off course by the 100km/h wind. Other impressive players were Eoin Healy, Daniel Malone, David Keogh and sub Carl Dunne. Two third year players made the team, the massive Kevin McBride and tough tackling Colin Byrne which bodes well for our future prospects.  Roar on the Lucan Lions!

Scrooge: Well done to all involved in the outstanding Junior Musical Society production of Scrooge. The many hours of rehearsals and preparation really paid off. A special mention must go to Mr. Duffy and Ms. Dunbar. Check out the Music Department pages for a report and loads of fab photos.

Basketball: Lucan Community College have progressed to the Dublin senior basketball final, after a rather
impressive performance against Blackrock opposition, in the shape of Newpark Comprehensive, last Thursday, at Lucan’s very own leisure centre. Final score 57;33.

Chamber Choir on TV3 Ireland AM: The chamber choir under the guidance of Mr. Duffy and Mr. Purcell were featured on TV 3’s Ireland AM programme. It is great honour for our school to be selected for such a show. Also a number of our Young Scientists have been in the TV studios to be filmed for an upcoming documentary on the Young Scientist Exhibition.

Transition Year at Christmas 2006: Our transition year students have been extremely busy in the run up to Christmas. Students have been working hard on Enterprise projects such as Cake sales, car washes, personalised notebooks and a Smoothie shop. The Central Remedial Clinic was extremely appreciative of money raised through the sale of Santa Bears by our students.

Lucan 'Conern' debating beat all teams to top the leagues 'Group of Death': The senior debating team comprising, Sharon Hickey, Cathal Dunne, Katie Maher and Joanna Butcher continued on their impressive winning ways in the Concern Debating competition. They are now in the knock out stages after three straight victories over three private and exclusive fee-paying schools, Mount Sackville, Castleknock College and Clongowes Wood College. The team was Sharon Hickey (Capt.), Joanna Butcher, Cathal Dunne and Katie Maher.

Hurling 2006 - 2007

Our senior hurlers had a rather disappointing start to their hurling campaign, after a narrow loss, in a game of no fewer than 7 goals, away to Celbridge neighbours, Salesian College last Monday. Lucan went into the game, off the back off last years "C" championship victory. But Salesians themselves were no short of hurling silverware, with last years "B" championship crown to their name, setting up what would hopefully be a gripping encounter.

It was the Celbridge side who started the brighter of the two, with early points from their two wing forwards, who proved to be the major treat to the Lucan defence, throughout the game. As Lucan gradually forced themselves into the game, with some well taken frees from corner-forward Alan Whyte, the Salesian attacks paid off, with a well worked goal, in which the Lucan goalie was left with no chance.

After that, Lucan found the sort of form they had being hoping for. Midfielder and Captain Peter Kelly along with centre forward Aiden Roche and Robert Lester picked off points to narrow the gap and to leave Lucan within striking distance. At half time, it was the home side that went in the happier, knowing they did not let the Lucan team get into their stride.

Into the second half and it was more frustration for the Community college. Going forward Lucan looked a real threat, but certain lapses at the heart of their defence let them down conceding further scores. Toward the end of the game, Lucan was chasing the result in a game in which they were in complete control of. Chances not converted at the pivotal stages which also proved crucial. The game ended a disappointing 4-11 to Lucan’s 3-11.

Lucan will now have to win their next two qualifying games in order to qualify for the knock-out stages in which they will be expected to advance. Other good performances from the game were Aiden Roche, Eoghan Caribini and Gareth Hamilton.

Minister for Education visits LCC

The Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin TD visited Lucan Community College on Tuesday 17 October 2006, for the launch of the Junior Cert science Interactive initiative in conjunction with Intel Ireland.

Lucan Community College has been selected for the virtual launch of a set of internet support materials prepared under the sponsorship of Intel (Ireland) Ltd. for learning and teaching in relation to the new Junior Certificate Science programme, examined for the first time this year. The reason for our being selected is strongly linked with the involvement of Science teachers, members of staff of this school, with the design, development and piloting at various times over recent years of ICT-based materials supporting teaching of Junior Cycle, Transition Year and Senior Cycle Physical science modules.

The proceedings were video-recorded and the whole event was mounted on the world-wide web.

Maths Week 2006: A range of Maths related activities are taking place this week in the college. On Monday our transitions year went on the Hamilton walk, and re-traced the steps of one of Irelands most famous Mathematicians. On Wed. a number of our students are attending a series of Maths workshops in Maynooth. Throughout the week there a variety of activities including, lunch time games and puzzle competitions.

Lucan Community College Maths Week 2006

By Leanne Caulfield. Maths was the buzzword in Lucan Community College this week, as celebrations for the first, national Maths week got under way. The first Maths week Ireland took place from the 16th to the 20th of October and was organised by Calmast (Centre for the Advancement of learning of Science, Maths and Technology) to promote the understanding, awareness and appreciation of mathematics throughout the island of Ireland.

The school was festooned with a colourful array of maths themed posters designed by the talented young artists of first and second year. The morning announcements also received jazzing up with the incorporation of maths rhymes masterminded by some creative members of staff.

Many activities were planned for the week and students were spoilt for choice with a wide range of mathematical activities taking place, designed to tease the brains of all young scholars.

Monday saw the transition year students set out for the “Hamilton Walk”, organised by the NUI, Maynooth. The starting point of the walk was Dunsink Observatory and from there students followed a route along the Royal Canal, taking in the Brougham Bridge, which stretches over the canal at Broombridge railway station. It was on this bridge that the famous Irish mathematician, Sir. William Rowan Hamilton inscribed the formula for his theory of quaternions on the 16th of October 1943. Hamilton inscribed the formula on the bridge as it had come to him while on a walk with his wife and he feared that he would forget it. The route of the “Hamilton walk” was the route undertaken by Hamilton and his wife on that day. The walk provided a valuable opportunity for transition year students to learn a little about the great Irish mathematician and his works.

On Wednesday morning, a group of thirty senior students departed the school destined for a series of maths lectures in the NUI, Maynooth. To celebrate maths week, these lectures were organised for second level senior students and were aimed at showing students that maths is not just a whole load of numbers but that there are many concepts behind maths and that maths is incorporated into everything around us. Students were treated to five consecutive mathematical talks, the topics of these talks ranged from the mathematics of juggling to the mathematics of music.

The Prism contest took place on Thursday for second level students around Ireland. Many schools chose to participate in the Prism contest, Lucan Community College included. The contest featured two separate mathematical challenges, one each for junior students and senior students. The contest was based on problem-solving skills and ingenuity rather than knowledge of the Junior/Leaving Certificate curriculum.

Many other mathematical activities took place in the school throughout the week. Sessions were held during lunchtimes, at which students could attempt to solve mathematical brainteasers and such like. Some senior students also prepared short presentations on a wide range of maths topics, which they gave to audiences of their fellow students at lunch times. The topics of these presentations ranged from speed, distance and time to basic algebra to Pythagoras’ theorem.

As maths week drew to a close, the general verdict from Lucan Community College students was that: “maths = fun!” Many thanks to Mr. Duffy, Ms Birnie and all the Maths teachers.
