Incoming First Years 2024

Welcome to the information page for 1st Year 2024

Additional Information to support Enrolment and Admission process (updated 16/04/2024)

A text message has been sent to all parents of incoming first year students seeking additional information that will be of value for your child's transition to the school. Please complete it carefully. Please supply any additional documentation requested in the Acceptance Form if you have not already done so.

Health Form (updated 16/04/2024)

In addition, please complete the Health Information Form available here if your child has a long-term health condition. You may need the assistance of your child’s healthcare professional in order to complete it fully. A printed version of the form is available from the front office if needed. If you would prefer to meet with a staff member to complete the form or if you have any questions, then please phone the school requesting to speak to the appropriate member of staff.

Your child’s completed Healthcare Information Form will be stored in a folder in the front office and will include helpful details about your child’s condition, current medication, triggers, individual symptoms and emergency contact numbers. The information will help school staff to better understand your child’s individual condition. This information will also be made available to any staff member organising a school trip or tour and to any health professional called to the school to assist with an emergency situation involving your son/daughter.

Please make sure that the information you provide is accurate and that the school is kept informed about changes to your child’s condition or medication. We remind you that while staff cannot administer medication to students without special arrangements being put in place, we can ensure that there is a clear plan in place to support your son/daughter as they manage their health condition.

Thank you for assisting us in providing a safe and secure environment for your child’s education.

Frequently Asked Questions
Thanks to parents who asked these questions at our Teams Live information event. If you have a different question, please email the school at admin@lucancc.ie and we will do our best to direct you to the relevant staff member.

Q. Hi, when will the extension and autism class be finished?
A. We are awaiting a further update from the Department of Education at the moment to formally appoint our Main Contractor. This will allow work to being on site hopefully later this year. It will be approximately a 3 year project.

Q. Do you provide the parental reports from the CAT assessment?
A. Yes, we make the results of your child's assessment available to you at some stage during their 1st year.

Q. The Department of Education announced that Junior Cycle students will receive free school
books next year as part of the Government’s 2024 budget. How will this work?
A. While the Department has announced funding for books for second level, there is no plan announced yet for how this is to be organised. We will hopefully know more before we publish booklists and will keep you up to date with developments.

Q. Is there an exemption for foreign language if recommended by psychological report?
A. While there is an official exemption process for Irish if students satisfy certain conditions, there is no such process for a modern foreign language exemption. However, you can meet with our Additional Needs Team and find out more about the circumstances when students do not need to take a language.

Q. When is the incoming student assessment taking place?
A. There are two assessment dates. 7th Feb is for Scoil Áine students and 21st Feb is for all other primary school students. Your child should be brought to our school at the time we will confirm with you shortly. Some schools will walk the students over from the primary school. But you may have to bring your student here if smaller numbers are coming to us from that school. We will communicate more about this closer to the date. Both tests will be on in the morning time. Students will use our school computers and need to have a set of wired headphones with them.

Q. If you already have a child in the school can you use the same VS Ware login details?
A. We will issue a special VSware link for your incoming child's options process and then once your child starts with us, you will be able to see all of your children on the same VSware page

Q. Do you do a sampling programme for subject options or do they have the opportunity to
change an option?
A. We don't operate a taster programme for options but listen carefully to parents and students if they feel that they have selected a subject that they are finding challenging and try to change options if resources allow.

Q. Do you have a coding subject at Junior Cycle?
A. At the moment we offer Digital literacy and wellbeing to 1st year students to ensure that they have the skills to use the MS Office package that they have access to in the school and the attitudes and knowledge to deal with some of the challenges that can arise from living in a digital media world. This does not include a coding element. We also offer Computer Science as an option for Leaving Certificate students and we run a TY coding module as an option also.

Q. Are children allowed out for lunch or must remain in school?
A. Junior students (1st to 3rd) can either stay in school for lunch and use the school canteen or bring a packed lunch. Junior students are not allowed to access any local shops or restaurants during lunch time. Senior students (TY to 6th year) can use local shops and restaurants. Our school canteen can accept electronic payments if you want to provide your child with a card that they can use.

Q. My son uses a laptop on the recommendation of an occupational therapist. Do we need to do
anything to get a laptop awarded for use in Lucan CC.
A. Yes, an assistive technology grant will need to be applied for. Please phone the school and make an appointment to meet with our Additional Needs post holder.

Q. Do students with additional needs receive support in organizational skills such as organizing
books, lockers, getting to class etc.
A. Our additional needs team and SNAs will organise a special focussed tour for students with additional needs if needed before they start with us. They will also receive additional help during the student induction days at the start of the school year.

Q. When will we get full information about the Options Choice process?
A. Once we have finalised the structure of the Junior Cycle course on offer for the incoming 1st years, we will send on all of the relevant information to you. Current 1st years study Maths, English, Irish (unless exemption is in place), either French or German and 3 options subjects from a list of 9 as well as wellbeing subjects such as SPHE, PE, CSPE and Digital Wellbeing. Science is not compulsory in our school but as a lot of students wish to take it, we put on many classes of science to facilitate this. If there are changes in the programme, we will let you know in good time before you have to make your subject choice. Please look at our recorded Open Day video from a few years ago with your child to help you to get more information about each subject on offer.

This page will remain available in case of any late offered for a place in 1st year 2024 and will then be updated for the Admissions 2025 process which will begin in October 2024.
